Main research question: how can waste management be realised most effectively at school?
How can waste management be realized most effectively at school?
In class rooms as, we have said there already are separate rubbish bins for trash and paper and we think that this should also count in canteens and also a rubbish bin for plastic for recycling.
You can have billboards in school with messages about recycling and big bins with the recycling logo on it so that pupils can be more alarmed about throwing these kinds of stuff away
The canteens should not have plastic containers where you put fries, spring rolls and chicken nuggets in because this is bad for the environment. Instead of this we can have something made of paper or they should hand out reusable plates. They can also give pupils that don’t recycle a sort of punishment (nothing too harsh).
The school can hire special people to give us (the pupils) lessons about this subject so that we can realise how bad this really is and what will happen to the world. For example, at the moment we have as much plastic as the whole of Europe. Another example is that scientist have found an estimated amount of 8.3 billion tonnes amount of plastic. If the world has too much plastic which it already has then we could move the plastic to another planet or we could move to another planet, but the animals will suffer a lot. there already suffering, but it would be worse. A man is trying to make something to remove all of the plastic out of the sea.
Sub question:
* Describe your school (number of pupils, what kind of building, etc.). Add some pictures.
In our school there are around the 900 pupils and they are all divided in different groups, different types of education (like TTO bilingual education), different types of teachers and different types of subjects e.g. math, English, German, history, French, science etc. Our school is a two-floor building. It has 3 PE (physical education/gymnastics) rooms. We used to have 2 lessons every week but this year for some reason we have 3 lessons per week and when it gets hot in The Netherlands we usually go outside for PE. Our school has 28 classrooms on the bottom floor and 28 on the top floor (all added up together there are 56) and in these classes there are only lessons given, other rooms like the teachers’ room where most of the teachers go in breaks and in between lessons to have a cup of coffee, computer rooms this is where we go during lessons to practise our skills or work on projects like this one and other rooms are left out. Inside of our school it got newly painted and now the inside of the school is purple and pink for the most part. Our school also has information study centre (ISC). This is the place where we did most of this project and this is also a place where you can hang out with your friends but try not to make too much noise otherwise the teacher will sent you out of the ISC. In our school we also have a canteen where you can buy stuff or sit down around a table to play cards or study for a test. Really close to our school we also have mall with a lot of stores where you can buy food in the breaks or if you are thirsty you can buy something to drink. Outside of our school we have place to put your bicycle and every morning this place is full or close to full.
* Rubbish produced at school
- Measure the amount of rubbish produced on two days. Make pictures.
- Are younger students producing more rubbish than older students? What about boys and girls?
- What kind of rubbish is being produced by students at school (plastic, paper, food, etc.)?
- What happens with the rubbish? What happens with the rubbish after the breaks?
- Are students involved in collecting the rubbish, in cleaning the canteens?
- Why are students throwing some rubbish on the ground?
* School policy
- What is the school policy about use of paper/recycling paper?
- Are there any methods to recycle waste at school/ seperate garbage?
- What are the school regulations about rubbish/chewing gum. What happens if a student throws something on the ground?
- Has ICT-technology contributed to reduce the use of paper at school?
* Which methods can be used to limit the amount of rubbish? Name at least two.
Another way to reduce waste is to put water in a reusable bottle.

WastePoint waste management interview
What is your company doing?
We are helping other company with cleaning their waste, what I mean with that is the waste what the companies produce needs to go to anywhere where its being recycled and that is how we help the companies.
What is the best thing you have done as a company?
We have acquired a market position. We belong to the better companies when it goes about waste management from the Netherlands.
Are you doing more than just waste management?
No, we only help the other companies and give them advise when they need. Most of the times is it about waste but sometimes about the environment.
What is your goal with this company?
To help environment and we want to become bigger. We want to get more companies.
What do you think about all the rubbish that is the sea?
I think it is horrible that the waste is in sea. You need to avoid that situation by putting your rubbish in containers, shaving and you need to make sure that there is a good system.
Interview with 10 students:
1) I think it is a bit too much.
2) It’s a bit much because you can see that the bins are full and rubbish on ground
3) It’s okay it could be better. I see sometimes plastic on the school
4) School makes much rubbish, there is a bit too much.
5) It much in the canteens and you need to clean it.
6) We use too much plastic in school.
7) There is too much rubbish in school
8)It is too much on the ground.
9) In the halls it is clean, but in canteens are much on the ground
10)It is only been cleaned up by the teachers

- What happens with the rubbish? What happens with the rubbish after the breaks?
- Are students involved in collecting the rubbish, in cleaning the canteens?
- Why are students throwing some rubbish on the ground?
- In 2 days we usually produce enough waste to fill around 7 garbage bins (medium garbage bins).
- The amount of waste is the same if you’re older or if you’re younger, but with girls and boys what we have found is that boys produce a lot more than girls most of the times.
- Students produce: plastic waste (candy, bottles and more kinds of foods), paper, food, metal. Those kinds of waste are produced.
- The rubbish stays in the bins until it is somewhat full or if it has been 2 days until it will be thrown out. When this gets thrown out a lot happens. When rubbish is disposed of in landfills, it is segregated into different types, rolled over and compacted into a pile. The waste is lined with clay before another pile is added to it. Moreover, the bottom and sides of the waste pile are lined to prevent contamination of ground water. Landfills also produce methane and it is collected with the help of pipes.
- If students did something what they shouldn’t do, they get a punishment. The punishment can be cleaning the tables, wiping the leaves away or cleaning the rubbish. If a student drops something the need to clean it themselves. It can be that you accidently dropped your water. Then you need to ask for a mop to clean it.
- Students drop the rubbish on the ground because they are too lazy to walk to the rubbish bin. Sometimes students leave there rubbish on the tables and they just go to their next classes (which some people of our class actually do). That can be because they forgot to take it or they just don’t want to do it.

* Which methods can be used to limit the amount of rubbish? Name at least two.
- The school has a separate blue bin for paper in every classroom, so they try to reduce paper waste in 2 big paper containers every Friday
- The only recycling method that they have used is a separate blue bin for paper. Fluorescent tubes are collected separately
- If someone chews gum inside of school (the canteen does not count or hallways) than they need to spit it out immediately into a garbage bin. If someone throws something onto the ground, then teachers or janitors (concierge) are going to say to immediately throw the waste into a garbage bin.
- ICT-technology contributes to the reduce of paper, because some projects or the most are done on computers. If papers are stuck in the printer, the papers will be reused
- 2 ways to limit waste are as followed:
Another way to reduce waste is to put water in a reusable bottle.
